Safely Enjoying your Summer

8/8/2017 (Permalink)

There are many great things that come along with the great thrill of summer like swimming, many outdoor activities, but most importantly cook outs and campfires. Using the grill and campfires are huge instigators for house fires. Here are some safety tips on preventing this...

Grilling Safety Tips:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outside.
  • The grill should be placed several feet away from the home, deck railings and out from under leaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep caution of children and pets around the grilling area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Always make sure your gas grill's lid is open before lighting it.

For charcoal grills...

  • There are many ways to get charcoal ready for use. Chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Campfire Safety tips:

  • You should keep your fire 8 to 10 feet away from anything such as your house, chairs, food, etc.
  • Have water nearby. Controlling a fire can be just as important as putting it out.
  • Safety proof your pit:
  1. Clear all debris from around the pit like garbage and grass. A 5-foot perimeter of soil around the campfire space is recommended.
  2. If there isn't a metal ring, circle the pit with rocks or stones. It will help keep the fire in it's borders.
